In
Virginia, surety bail bondsmen are regulated by the Bureau of Insurance which is part of the State
Corportation Commission and by the Department of Criminal
Justice Services. If you want to be a bondsman, contact us. We can help you with the process. Keep in mind that under the
best circumstances it will take about six months for you to qualify. It is not a quick process.
First, visit the
DCJS website and review the requirements. If you meet those requirements, the first step in the process is to obtain a Property
and Casualty Insurance Licence. This requires that you pass a standardized test. Although not required, we recommend that
you take a pre-licensing class.
The next step is to take a required bail bonds class. At the end of this class,
you must pass another test. The final step is to be appointed an agent of an insurance company that provides bail bonds.
Bail bonds is not an easy business. The work is hard and the hours can be long and irregular. And unlike other forms
of insurance, the bondsman is the one who suffers the financial loss if a defendant fails to appear. But if you work hard
and pay attention to business, the rewards can be great.
